8 Clear Skin Tips for Summer

July 9, 2020

Hello, loves! I am happy you are here, although I am sad you must be dealing with summer breakouts! They are seriously such an annoyance. Frustrating, embarrassing, painful… summer is the time to have perfectly glowing skin, right? Pimples don’t know that, which is why today I am sharing with you some of my best clear skin tips for the summer months.

It’s always important to switch up your beauty routine with the change of each season. The changes in weather can have an impact on your skin and it is important to have a routine that helps your skin flourish in each season.  The summer months bring out the hottest of weather conditions, which in turn brings an abundance of sweat, oil, and acne. Yay…summer…

To help you continue to love summer and all the beauty she brings, I am sharing with you my eight favorite clear skin tips to help you eliminate current acne and help prevent future acne from forming.

Weekly (Gentle) Exfoliation

As someone has dealt with their fair share of acne over the years, exfoliation always seemed risky. Am I damaging my face even more? Am I irritating any existing acne? Gentle exfoliation a few times a week is vital in eliminating current acne and inhibiting new acne from forming. When you use an exfoliant you are removing dead skin cells. Acne-causing bacteria thrive on dead skin cells! Not only does regular exfoliation smooth and soften your skin, but your complexion will overall be much brighter and clearer. My favorite is Yes To Grapefruit Vitamin C Glow Boosting Daily Facial Scrub.

Lightly Wash Your Face

Thanks to the intense summer heat that causes us to sweat more profusely, our oil glands are working in overdrive causing a pileup of sticky dead skin cells. Hello, acne! To help prevent acne, wash your face twice a day with a gentle, foaming cleanser that is packed with antioxidants and perfect for your individual skin type. My favorite is Pacifica’s Sea Foam Complete; 100% vegan, and made with coconut water and coconut oil that helps to eliminate any leftover makeup (another reason for breakouts).

Nourish Your Skin

After washing your face, apply a light and oil-free moisturizer that contains SPF every day. Heavy moisturizers can further clog pores, leading to more acne. Using a moisturizer with SPF is important to further protect your skin from harm and irritation. My every day go-to is COOLA Mineral Face Organic Matte Sunscreen. With a soft as a cloud matte finish, this is sure to become your favorite moisturizer for summer (and all-year-round).

Lighten Your Makeup Routine

Lightening your makeup routine is important in the summer months to help keep your skin as healthy as possible. For summer makeup, you’ll always want to use products that are as light and sheer as possible, or wear nothing at all! If you must wear makeup, wearing less is a must so you don’t experience caking and creasing which can only assist in further clogging your pores. Use a light concealer only where you need it (i.e. covering up dark circles).  Looking for more summer makeup products?

Drink Lemon Water

Drinking lemon water can help purify the skin and give you a clear and healthy glow by nourishing from the inside out. Having a glass of warm lemon water first thing in the morning helps detoxify your body by purging toxins, helping to naturally reduce acne. Lemon water is jam-packed with Vitamin C, which contains some serious antioxidant properties. Cold lemon water (ideal for hot summer days) still gives your body the same benefits, just not AS MUCH as the warm water does. Read more beauty benefits of lemon water.

Don’t Touch Your Face

Your outside, hot and sweaty, and all you want to do is brush away the accumulating beads of sweat. Resist! Using your hands or even a napkin to wipe away the sweat and oil only moves it around your face and ultimately adds extra pore-clogging bacteria. Blotting papers can help remove the oil completely. As someone with super oily skin, discovering blotting papers was a total skin changer for me. Blotting papers help remove excess oil from our skin, which can help prevent clogged pores.

Wash Your Sheets Often

A simple yet oftentimes overlooked solution to help prevent acne — wash your sheets more often! Especially your pillowcase. Even your freshly washed face can still carry with it some oil and bacteria. Day after day of bacteria pileup where you lay your face at night is a recipe for an acne attack. If you don’t have the time to do a full bedding wash and change, at least throw your pillowcase into the wash every week.

Spot Treat Breakouts

It’s important not to touch, pick, pop, or over-mess with our acne in any way. But, if you’re dealing with a hard-to-treat pimple (or pimples) use a spot treatment at night containing Benzoyl Peroxide. If you’ve never used Benzoyl Peroxide, use it sparingly at first, because it can cause irritation to sensitive skin.

Thanks for stopping by! I truly hope these eight clear skin tips can help you achieve clearer skin all summer long!

This is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve ever read (listened to, thank you @netgalley). If you have the chance to get your hands on this one, READ IT!

It doesn’t just tell you what happened in history, it truly makes you feel it. It educates you and moves you all at the same time. Thank you @tammyehuf I’ll read anything you write.
