How To Style Your Boho Farmhouse Home

March 6, 2022

It only took a millisecond for the words “boho farmhouse” to catch and hold my interest while scrolling Pinterest. After all, it encompasses my absolute two favorite decorating styles. Boho farmhouse decor is exactly what it sounds like — a complementing blend of the two styles. It’s warm and cozy meets eccentric and carefree.

Although the two styles have plenty of aesthetic differences, one major similarity is that the typical color palettes for both contain blends of neutrals, whites, and greys. Not always, of course. Especially with boho, which can be very bold and vibrant in color at times.

If your home heavily embodies one of the styles it won’t take too much effort to revamp your decor to consist of both. The similarities between boho and farmhouse make this a seamless and beautiful combination.

Let’s refresh ourselves on the typical characteristics of the two styles separately.

Boho embodies warm, relaxed, and lived-in elements that add life to your space. The idea of “too much” doesn’t apply to the boho style. In fact, no style rules actually apply –this style favors personal taste above all else. By combining textures, colors, patterns, and greenery you can create a beautiful and unique space that encourages a relaxed state of mind.

The farmhouse decor style is one that is welcoming, warm, and overall charming. With a strong focus on practicality and using what you already have (i.e. repurposed), the overall look and feel of the farmhouse style is down-to-earth and homey.

Below are a few great ways you can easily incorporate the two styles as a cohesive look throughout your home that will exude charm and warmth. You’ll notice most of the rooms below encompass more than one idea, giving you so many ways to style your newly designed boho farmhouse home!

Pair Neutrals With Bright Colors

One easy “rule” when combining the two styles is to keep neutrals in play. The farmhouse color palette is typically made up of neutral shades of white and grey. To incorporate boho, pair bolder colors or patterns against the neutral wall and decor. If your walls are more boho-bold and vivid, pair neutral decor and furniture against it instead.

Patterns

Patterns are incredibly eye-catching and create so much visual interest in a room. Choosing the right pattern for your home can act as a complementary accent to your decor. Patterns can be used for both your furniture and decor, but keep the color palette simple and neutral. Even in neutral tones, patterns can easily liven up a space that could have otherwise fallen flat visually.

Greenery

Although greenery is typically one of the most prevalent decor must-haves for boho, it can be seen in the farmhouse style — just a little toned down. An easy way to make your farmhouse decor more boho — forget to tone it down and add even more greenery. If you are trying to incorporate more farmhouse into your lush boho abode, style around the greenery in an all-neutral color palette.

Subtle Use of Black

Boho and farmhouse styles rely on the use of black in their decor, furniture, and hardware finishings. However, both styles embody a bright and airy aesthetic and only require a subtle use of the color. Too much can sometimes create a heavy and dark atmosphere — especially if there is limited natural light.

Layering Textures

Adding texture to a room will give it visual weight and interest, plus it will keep it from looking flat. An easy way to create visual interest is by layering multiple textures. Fur, fringe, shag, knit, wool, leather, feathers, wood,  just to name a few. Choose the textures you like best for both furniture and decor and don’t be afraid to mix them all together.

Varying Art & Decor

Just like the textures of the room, varying pieces of art and decor add visual interest. Combine simple framed pieces of farmhouse art (usually with a word or phrase) with geometric pieces, tasseled baskets, or macrame hangings. When in doubt add macrame — a common boho piece of wall art. Plus it adds to the overall textured look.

Unfinished Wood

The use of unfinished wood in furniture and decor is heavily seen in both boho and farmhouse-styled homes. The natural wood will seamlessly pair with a variety of textures, decor, and colors. Speaking of color, unfinished wood is an easy way to create something truly unique with the use of paint or stain. Or leave it unfinished to remain the perfect base in practically any setting.

As a serial highlighter and tabber, this book would have been ABSOLUTELY COVERED in little tabs if it was a physical copy. My Kindle highlights will have to suffice until pub day (June 2027) because I have so many thoughts.

the ghosts, the art, the wasps, the homewrecking…

This book was strange, sad, funny, beautifully unsettling, and somehow incredibly comforting all at once… and I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My full review ⚠️with spoilers ⚠️ is up on the blog!

Thank you @netgalley @spiegelandgrau @beckymandelbaum for this amazing ARC!
