Thrifty Lit: Outlanders A Breath of Snow and Ashes

Here we are again—my newest, most favorite hobby: searching high and low for thrifted Outlander series hardbacks. Each trip through the doors feels like a mapless treasure hunt. As I park my car I am filled with both anticipation and uncertainty, as I never know what I’ll find tucked away on those shelves.

And now, I’m so excited to say I’ve found my second one: A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the sixth book in the series. Like my first find, The Fiery Cross, this one has so clearly lived a full life before finding its way into my hands. It’s an old library book, still wrapped in its clear protective cover with ‘Gabaldon’ on the white spine sticker.

I could carefully peel off those remnants of its library past, but honestly, what’s the point? When this entire search is meant to end with brand-new apothecary-inspired dust jackets. So, instead, I tear off the protective cover to reveal another well-loved book beneath. Its pages are practically falling off the spine.

There’s something so charming about a book that’s been so heavily loved — especially when no one needs to know it’s holding on by threads.

At the unbeatable price of just 50 cents AGAIN, I still can’t get over the thrill of walking up to the register with a book that holds so much meaning to me, only to hand over spare change.

Of course, finding A Breath of Snow and Ashes has only fueled my determination to complete this mission. As I add it to my growing collection, I’m reminded of how much I adore the process —the hunt, the discovery, the proud display on my bookshelf.
