The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue Review: A Story That Reads Like Poetry

February 4, 2025

There are books that simply entertain, a “just-for-fun read” as I call them. There are books that keep you up late turning the pages, unable to sleep until you’ve lived out the story in its entirety. And then there are books that settle deep into your bones. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was one of those for me.

It’s the kind of book that lingers long after the last page—not just because of the plot but because of the way it makes you feel. The way it makes you think about time, love, memories, and the marks we leave behind.

A Love Letter to Readers

“Books, she has found, are a way to live a thousand lives—or to find strength in a very long one.”

V.E. Schwab, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

The moment I read that line, I knew this book understood me. Books have always been more than stories; they’re anchors, escapes, reminders that we are not alone. I think that’s why Addie’s story resonated so deeply—because, in so many ways, she’s a reader’s soul in character form.

Addie truly embodies what it feels like to be a reader. She craves stories, seeks solace in art, and understands the power of words in shaping how we see the world. Just like many of us who lose ourselves in books, she wants to be remembered, to leave something behind that proves she was here.

She wants to exist in a way that matters.

In that way, she feels like a reflection of every book lover—the way we cherish stories, the way we find pieces of ourselves in them, and the way we long for stories to outlive us.

“What is a person, if not the marks they leave behind?”

V.E. Schwab, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

This story embodies the idea of being seen and knowing that your existence has left an imprint of some sort. And isn’t that something we all think about at some point in our lives?

It made me wonder: What marks am I leaving? Not in some grand, world-changing way, but in the everyday, mundane moments. The laughter shared, the kindness given, the love poured into the people around me. Maybe we don’t all need our names etched into history books. Just maybe, the way we live in our daily lives can be enough.

A Book Like Poetry

Some books are easy, quick reads; others require you to slow down and savor. For me, this one falls into the latter category, and I loved every second of it. The prose is lyrical, almost dreamlike, and it makes you want to linger on certain passages just to soak them in a little more. There were so many lines I found myself rereading, just to really feel the weight of them again and again.

“Blink, and the years fall away like leaves.”

V.E. Schwab, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

Love is often portrayed as something to hold onto at all costs, but there’s something even more powerful about a love that knows when to release. Addie’s relationships—especially the ones she has to let go of—felt so real. There’s an ache in this book that stays with you, the kind that only a beautifully told love story can leave behind.

The Marks We Leave

“Stories are a way to preserve one’s self. To be remembered. And to forget.”

V.E. Schwab, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

By the time I turned the last page, I knew this was a story I wouldn’t forget (which is why I am in desperate search for it on my thrift store adventures). And maybe that’s the irony of it all—Addie fears being forgotten, but her story ensures that she won’t be at all.

Some books are meant to be read and set aside. Others, like The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, find a way to stay with you. And that, I think, is its magic.

Have you read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue? Did it stay with you the way it did for me?

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
