You know those romantic comedies you could rewatch a hundred times with your best friend, memorizing every scene and line and then quoting them nonstop together years later? Friends To Lovers by Sally Blakely felt exactly like that for me.

This book gave me major Something Borrowed vibes with the beach settings and this undeniable in your face love that the FMC is too worried about admitting to. It’s such a playful, heartfelt, and nostalgic romance that perfectly captures why the friends-to-lovers trope continues to be one of my abosolute favorites.

Friends-to-lovers stories carry highly emotional stakes burdened by uncertainty. This story captures that hesitancy beautifully. Joni and Ren aren’t just navigating romantic feelings, they’re confronting the possibility of losing each other. A lifelong friendship could be gone if things fall apart.

That anxiety lingers throughout the entire book, and listening to this story in audiobook format added an extra layer of emotional immersion. The narrator helped emphasize the warmth, humor, and vulnerability that define Joni and Ren’s entire relationship. She truly allowed Joni’s anxieties and self-doubt to come to life, which felt incredibly believable and relatable.

It’s one of those songs tied to a specific era of growing up, the kind of song that can instantly transport you back to who you were when you first heard it… and every meaningful time you’ve heard it since.
