Heart of The Wolf Queen by Sarah Gallego: Slow-Burn Romantasy Review

March 13, 2026

“It was as if I knew each swell and curve of his body like my own. the unmistakable beat of his heart that echoed mine.” Heart of The Wolf Queen by Sarah Gallego

Slow burns are always the BEST kind of romances to read, and Heart of The Wolf Queen absolutely delivered. Fierce and unafraid to speak her mind heroine? Check. Protective hero? Double check. (Matthias and Pablo, obviously).

This audiobook had me hooked from start to finish. Aside from the slow-burn tension, I loved how Pablo felt like a real character rather than just a sidekick canine to Sorrow.

Heart of The Wolf Queen Synopsis

Meet Sorrow, a heroine you can immediately love After a devastating accident in childhood leaves her partially blind, she’s locked away in a tower, and offered as a sacrifice to the gods (by her stepfather!!). But Sorrow refuses to die quietly. She not only has a dark magic deep inside of her, but a fiercely protective wolf named Pablo right by her side.

When she finally escapes the tower and impending sacrifice, she’s taken by the one man she never expected to see again: Matthias. The boy she once trusted, loved, and who broke her heart when he abandoned her. Matthias needs an alliance with Sorrow’s family that can only be sealed through marriage. Sorrow must wed the man who betrayed her or die.

This friends-to-lovers romantasy combines slow-burn tension, yearning, and magical adventures that had me hooked from the very first page.

Heart Of The Wolf Queen Review

Fierce, stubborn, and unafraid to speak her mind, I loved Sorrow immediately. Her determination to survive, even after the absolutely devastating accident that impacted her sight plus all her time locked away in a tower, made her a character I only wanted the best for. A well deserved happy ending was more than necessary.

So then, there’s Matthias. I am confident he could give her the happy ending she deserves, but honestly, what the hell? I wanted so much more clarity from him.

His past betrayal… Sorrow deserved all the answers, and I kept waiting for that moment where everything would finally come out. It may be something the author, Sarah Gallego, is saving for the sequel, but it left me with a few lingering questions.

Like, what has he been doing all this time? Whyyyy did he leave her? The man literally says to Sorrow, “I knew I found the missing part of my soul. That I didn’t want to live a day of my life without you in it.” He thought that of her when they were younger. So… why leave?! Come on, book 2… I’m counting on you!

Heart of The Wolf Queen Final Thoughts

I felt the listed tropes were a little off. It’s called a second‑chance romance, but honestly, it felt more like a friends-to-lovers story. They were only friends as kids, and that slow burn with so much yearning tension as adults? Perfect.

I listened to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a fantastic job. She made the story come to life by giving distinct voices to the characters and really conveying Sorrow’s emotions, making it a fully immersive audiobook experience for me.

Heart of the Wolf Queen was a fast-paced romantasy with everything you could want. Strong heroine, overly protective heroes (human and canine), and a slow-burn tension… this one is definitely worth the read.

⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
