Easy DIY Wooden Step Stool for Toddlers

October 30, 2022

Isn’t it both adorable and endearing how our little ones are always so eager to be part of our daily activities? Do you have a tiny sous-chef who’s your steadfast companion in the kitchen, too? I know I do. My toddler has truly mastered the art of being my shadow, particularly when I’m busy in the kitchen. It’s as if there’s a constant desire to witness every intricate detail of the cooking process – from the sizzling pans to the fragrant aromas that fill the air. And oh, the enthusiasm to lend a helping hand – whether it’s diligently scrubbing dishes or curiously observing as I prepare his morning bowl of fresh, colorful fruits.

“What are you doing in here, what are you making, can I help” These are questions that resonate throughout the day, accompanying every kitchen adventure we embark on. It’s a dance of curiosity that truly warms my heart. And let’s be honest, sometimes it feels like we’ve got our very own food critic, eager to taste-test and provide their invaluable insights.

As parents, it’s these everyday moments that etch themselves into our hearts. The kitchen becomes a hub of laughter, learning, and bonding, where little hands are eager to explore, learn, and contribute. So, here’s to our kitchen companions, the ones who sprinkle our cooking endeavors with a generous dose of unwavering curiosity. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Why Choose a DIY Wooden Step Stool

To make things easier on his ever-curious mind and his growing quest for independence, we took on a little DIY adventure – a customized wooden step stool. Our inspiration came from none other than the talented Ana White and her brilliantly detailed project, the Simple Step Stool. The best part? It’s tailor-made to suit the pint-sized inhabitants of our home, offering them just the right boost to explore their world.

Our wooden creation has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of our daily life, serving as a trusty companion for our son’s escapades. You’ll find it clumsily migrating from room to room, depending on the adventure of the day. One moment, it’s his trusty co-pilot on a mission to snag a chilled teething toy from the freezer for his little brother. Then next, it’s an essential support for reaching the bathroom sink, where there’s no such thing as too much soap on those little hands. And then sometimes it’s his partner in crime, as I find him shifting through the daily clutter on our living room TV console — a place he ingeniously scales to seek out things I’ve tucked away from his curious gaze. I applaud his ingenuity.

But lately, his baby brother has eagerly joined the step-stool brigade! His eyes light up with a mixture of fascination and glee as he ascends to a newfound vantage point, where the previously unseen world of kitchen counters unfolds before him.

While our little DIY triumph has significantly enhanced our toddler’s autonomy, it’s also an open invitation to imaginative exploration. Perhaps it’s time to consider crafting a second stool or even a larger version, ensuring there’s room for both sets of inquisitive feet. After all, as they grow and discover, these trusty wooden platforms are more than mere tools – they’re enablers of curiosity, catalysts of learning, and steadfast companions on the grand journey of childhood discovery.

DIY Toddler Stepstool Supplies:

  • 3 feet of 1×10 boards
  • 3 feet of 1×3 boards
  • Handles (optional — mine were $3)
  • Paint or stain (optional — I used milk paint I had on hand)

As a serial highlighter and tabber, this book would have been ABSOLUTELY COVERED in little tabs if it was a physical copy. My Kindle highlights will have to suffice until pub day (June 2027) because I have so many thoughts.

the ghosts, the art, the wasps, the homewrecking…

This book was strange, sad, funny, beautifully unsettling, and somehow incredibly comforting all at once… and I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My full review ⚠️with spoilers ⚠️ is up on the blog!

Thank you @netgalley @spiegelandgrau @beckymandelbaum for this amazing ARC!
