Anxiety During Pregnancy: Understanding & Coping

May 20, 2019

Pregnancy is an emotional rollercoaster. Joy, anticipation, and anxiety intermingle, often intensifying feelings that existed even before the pregnancy. Questions flood in as soon as the positive sign appears on the pregnancy test:

  • Will we make good parents?
  • Can we financially support our child?
  • Will our child be healthy and happy?
  • How will our relationship change?
  • Will I lose my identity beyond motherhood?

It’s natural for expectant parents, especially mothers, to harbor such concerns. However, when these worries escalate to persistent anxiety, it can be distressing.

Why Pregnancy Might Heighten Anxiety

Pregnancy can amplify anxiety due to significant hormonal changes affecting your brain’s chemistry. For some, this makes them feel tethered to the emotion, often feeling helpless.

Moreover, if you were on anxiety medication before becoming pregnant, doctors commonly advise halting its use, although exceptions are based on individual cases. It’s paramount to consult your healthcare provider about any decisions related to medication.

Coping Mechanisms: Tailored To You

Sleep More

Adequate sleep benefits both mother and child. Insufficient rest can lead to complications like low birth weight. If anxiety is hampering your sleep, try techniques like reading, avoiding screens before bedtime, or using a pregnancy pillow.

Stay Active

Physical activity has proven benefits in reducing anxiety. Even a 15-minute walk can make a difference. If you weren’t active before pregnancy, start slow and ensure you’re hydrating adequately.

Prenatal Yoga

This isn’t just about flexibility and muscle endurance for childbirth; it’s also a mental and emotional refuge. Prenatal yoga can be an instrumental tool in managing anxiety.

Eating Well

Certain foods can trigger anxiety. For instance, while some sugar is essential, an excess can amplify anxious feelings. Choose healthier sugar sources like fruits over processed options.

Talk About It

Sharing your feelings provides relief. Whether it’s with your partner, friends, or online communities of expecting mothers, find your support system.

Remember, it’s entirely normal to experience anxiety during pregnancy. Prioritizing your well-being is beneficial not just for you, but also for your growing baby.

As a serial highlighter and tabber, this book would have been ABSOLUTELY COVERED in little tabs if it was a physical copy. My Kindle highlights will have to suffice until pub day (June 2027) because I have so many thoughts.

the ghosts, the art, the wasps, the homewrecking…

This book was strange, sad, funny, beautifully unsettling, and somehow incredibly comforting all at once… and I loved it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My full review ⚠️with spoilers ⚠️ is up on the blog!

Thank you @netgalley @spiegelandgrau @beckymandelbaum for this amazing ARC!
