How to Decorate Your Christmas Tree

December 20, 2017

The Christmas tree is the focal point of your home during the holidays. It brings in a new sense of warmth and happiness to you and your family. I love relaxing in my home (watching TV, working on my computer) with only the lights of the tree illuminating the room. I absolutely love decorating our tree and giving it a personal touch.

My Christmas Tree: Past

Growing up we typically always had one tree which we decorated in family ornaments like, Baby’s 1st Christmas or homemade trinkets. But as the years went on my family began to have two Christmas trees; we kept the “family tree” but also adopted the idea of what I like to call the “fancy tree.” My mom’s idea, of course. My dad puts the tree up, my mom decorates.

But I loved our fancy tree. It had gorgeous white tinsel garland draped throughout, ribbon tied onto the branches, and crystal, sparkly, pink and white ornaments dangling and radiating in front of the white lights. This tree was a representation of my mom and the way she decorated the home. She’s glamorous and her home reflected that. Why not the Christmas tree, too?

What this taught me was that the Christmas tree should be a reflection of you. We had our “family tree” for when we were children, and my mom slowly incorporated a tree that better represented her home for when we were older and moving out.

My Christmas Tree: Present

2017 was a fantastic year for me and my husband – we got married! This year for our Christmas tree I decided to incorporate leftover wedding flowers. If you don’t know, we had an extremely DIY wedding and the flowers were a huge part of that. The greatest thing about using artificial flowers for your wedding: you get to keep them forever! Thus, we have a very floral Christmas tree. The tree has become a constant reminder to us about our wedding. The white and blush flowers that once covered the wedding aisle now rest upon our Christmas tree branches.

For your Christmas tree, take inspiration from the rest of your home and family. If you have children and want a more “kid friendly” and “family oriented” tree, go for that! Use the traditional bulbs that share memories, milestones, and family’s member’s names.  If you want to highlight a certain color, such as red or gold, or material, such as twine or lace, do that! Make your Christmas tree décor a part of you, your family, and your home. There’s no right or wrong way!

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!

I love that you used your wedding flowers to decorate your Christmas tree. We used artificial flowers for our wedding too (10+ years ago). I couldn’t bear the thought of spending all that money on flowers that were just going to be dead a week later. Mine are in a box somewhere in storage. I never thought of doing something like this with them. I’m going to have to dig them out and try this. A tree like that you could keep up all year long (I always hate taking down the Christmas tree – it always depresses me).

My thoughts exactly! Why pay SO MUCH for flowers that will be dead right away when you could keep them forever and use them again for fun things like this! You should definitely dig them out, and tell me if you use them! Thank you!!

This is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve ever read (listened to, thank you @netgalley). If you have the chance to get your hands on this one, READ IT!

It doesn’t just tell you what happened in history, it truly makes you feel it. It educates you and moves you all at the same time. Thank you @tammyehuf I’ll read anything you write.

My #ThoughtDaughter book stack from July—the month I tried to pick a theme that resonated the most with me. My standouts: Alone With You In The Ether, The Virgin Suicides, and My Year Of Rest and Relaxation which I think about every time I buy an iced coffee and consider buying a second. #bookstagram #bookstack #myyearofrestandrelaxation #alonewithyouintheether
