10 Style Tips for Your Boho Bedroom

May 10, 2020

Let’s chat about one of my all-time favorite decorating styles: boho! Transforming your bedroom space into the boho style is literally what dreams are made of. You’ll find peace and harmony and never want to leave your bed. After all, boho embodies warm, relaxed, and lived-in elements. Perfect for a bedroom.

So, how do you create a boho-style bedroom? The boho style combines textures, colors, patterns, and live greenery to create a beautiful and unique space. Boho style embodies the idea of adding life to your space. It embraces the carefree and speaks to artists and those alike who crave unconventional style. With boho styling, you ultimately want to create a space that encourages a relaxed state of mind; a warm and inviting space that puts you at ease and makes you feel happy. Again, what dreams are made of. Beds will not be vacant!

You see, the beauty of the boho style is that you really can’t go wrong with the decor. It’s all about creating a space that feels good to you. To help steer you in the right direction, we’ve listed out 10 styling tips to help create the boho bedroom of your dreams. Have fun styling!

1. Natural Light

As long as you have windows, this is perhaps the easiest style tip to follow — say yes to natural light! Natural light adds warmth and breathes life into a room. You can feel the energy of a room transformed by simply adding natural light. If you’re going to keep heavy drapes or blinds on your windows be sure to open them up and tie them back during the day. Let the light flood in and feel the room come alive!

2. Add Greenery

Add some lush green plants…and then add some more! Seriously, you cannot go wrong with adding more and more greenery to your boho bedroom. Plus, if you are styling in an all-neutral color palette, the green can act as a pop of color. It will be a lush botanical dream. Also, adding greenery to your rooms has been linked to uplifted moods and lessened stress and anxiety. Need I say more? Go green!

3. Wooden Furniture

When possible, opt for wooden furniture for your boho bedroom. Vintage pieces with carved detailing can add a sophisticated charm. Try to mix things up between your bed and nightstand and/or dresser for a more relaxed feel and a less matchy-matchy look. For example, if you have a solid wood bedframe try finding a wicker nightstand or a rattan stool.

4. Pops of Color

Most of the time boho style is conveyed using neutral, earthy colors, which is absolutely stunning. But a great way to make your boho bedroom a one-of-a-kind beauty that truly reflects you is to add a pop of color. You could paint an accent wall, your bedroom door, or a piece of furniture. Or you could choose colorful bedding, a rug, or a wall hanging. One pop of color or many colors throughout — both options are charming and will resemble a boho style.

5. Varying Textures

An easy way to create visual interest or “visual weight” in your bedroom is to add multiple textures. Fur, fringe, shag, knit, wool, leather, feathers — mix them all up! Choose the textures you like best for rugs, blankets, furniture, decor, and even wallpaper (yes, a textured wallpaper). Throw a wool blanket over a leather chair, a fur blanket on your linen bedding, or layer a shag rug beside your bed. Your bedroom will be far from looking flat.

6. Varying Art and Decor

Just like the textures of the room, varying pieces of art and decor add visual interest. Framed art pieces, posters, baskets, macrame hangings, wall tapestry, wood carvings — the list is endless when it comes to boho-style art and decor. Plus, you can even use your greenery as additional pieces of hanging decor (see the below example).

7. Hints of Black

Boho home style is all about embodying a bright and airy aesthetic, so you don’t want to make the room too heavy and dark with too much black. For a subtle hint of black try a metal bed frame. Pair it with a bright white duvet to balance out the heavy black. But if you love to incorporate black into your home decor try adding a black accent wall for one major pop of black. Or have one piece of furniture painted black so the room still feels as light and open as possible while still getting a good dose of black.

8. Layer Up

We’re talking about rugs and blankets and pillows — layer them up! Add throws on top of your bedding, add rugs onto rugs (yes, definitely try it), add more pillows on your bed or reading nook. And remember, go for varying textures when layering!

9. Lighting

Boho-style lighting can act as a piece of decor and create a huge impact on a room. Choose a light fixture that adds warmth and life to a room even when turned off. Overhead lighting, wall scones, table lamps, or even string lights — boho style can be found in all types of lighting options. Mix things up or keep it simple with one overhead light as a statement piece that ties the room together.

10. Patterns

The bedding, wall art, wallpaper, or rug — when in doubt, go with the fun, colorful pattern! Patterns are eye-catching and create so much visual interest in a room.

This is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve ever read (listened to, thank you @netgalley). If you have the chance to get your hands on this one, READ IT!

It doesn’t just tell you what happened in history, it truly makes you feel it. It educates you and moves you all at the same time. Thank you @tammyehuf I’ll read anything you write.

My #ThoughtDaughter book stack from July—the month I tried to pick a theme that resonated the most with me. My standouts: Alone With You In The Ether, The Virgin Suicides, and My Year Of Rest and Relaxation which I think about every time I buy an iced coffee and consider buying a second. #bookstagram #bookstack #myyearofrestandrelaxation #alonewithyouintheether
