Friends To Lovers Audiobook Review by Sally Blakely
“I try to push it all away. Remind myself it’s impossible. But the image of him comes floating back, unstoppable as the tide again and again and again.” – Friends To Lovers
You know those romantic comedies you could rewatch a hundred times with your best friend, memorizing every scene and line and then quoting them nonstop together years later? Friends To Lovers by Sally Blakely felt exactly like that for me.
This book gave me major Something Borrowed vibes with the beach settings and this undeniable in your face love that the FMC is too worried about admitting to. It’s such a playful, heartfelt, and nostalgic romance that perfectly captures why the friends-to-lovers trope continues to be one of my abosolute favorites.

Friends To Lovers Book Synopsis
Friends to Lovers follows childhood best friends Joni and Ren, who have built their lives around each other in a way that feels so effortless and unbreakable. When Joni moves across the country for her career, they create a tradition to remain connected. For each wedding they’re both invited to, they’ll go together as each other’s plus-one.
It’s a perfect plan… until a moment crosses a line and fractures the friendship they once believed was unbreakable.
When Joni returns to their shared summer home for her sister’s wedding, she’s determined to keep everything running smoothly, even if it means pretending that she and Ren are still just friends. But as the wedding festivities bring them back into each other’s lives, old feelings resurface, forcing them to confront whether their bond is strong enough to evolve or far too fragile to risk.
Friends To Lovers Audiobook Review
There’s something special about wedding-season romances and how they naturally create this sense of heightened emotion. In this story, the weddings Joni and Ren attend shape their emotional journey, pulling them closer while reminding them of everything they could possibly lose.
Friends-to-lovers stories carry highly emotional stakes burdened by uncertainty. This story captures that hesitancy beautifully. Joni and Ren aren’t just navigating romantic feelings, they’re confronting the possibility of losing each other. A lifelong friendship could be gone if things fall apart.
That quiet anxiety lingers throughout the book, and listening to this story in audiobook format added an extra layer of emotional immersion. The narrator helped emphasize the warmth, humor, and vulnerability that define Joni and Ren’s entire relationship. She truly allowed Joni’s anxieties and self-doubt to come to life, which felt incredibly believable and relatable.
Music and Memory
One of my absolute favorite elements of this book was how music was woven throughout Joni and Ren’s relationship. Certain songs act like emotional anchors in their friendship, marking moments in their lives and reflecting how they’ve grown together.
The story references Mr. Brightside by The Killers, which immediately struck a deeply personal chord for me. It’s one of those songs tied to a specific era of growing up, the kind of song that can instantly transport you back to who you were when you first heard it… and every meaningful time you’ve heard it since.
“There are certain songs that can burrow so far into your body that it feels like you’re hearing them for the first time and that there’s some kind of magic in that that can’t be replicated anywhere else in the universe.”
Friends to Lovers by Sally Blakey
That quote perfectly reflects how shared music becomes part of shared identity. Songs have the power to transport you into certain memories and emotions in ways that feel so timeless.
Friends To Lovers Final Thoughts
It’s playful, emotionally relatable, and filled with the kind of nostalgic magic that makes you reflect on past and present relationships that have shaped your life.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Friends to Lovers was an easy five-star read for me. It made me feel incredibly strong emotions while filling me with a deep sense of nostalgia. Yes, tears streamed down my face quite a few times.
