The Naturalist: A Regency Love Letter with Austen Vibes

May 3, 2025

Have I been obsessed (more than usual) with Pride and Prejudice lately? Yes, absolutely. With the 20th anniversary of the 2005 film just passing this April, paired with the endless edits of Elizabeth and Darcy floating around social media, my brain has been deep in all things Austen.

So when I was given the chance to read The Naturalist by Christina Dudley, I jumped on it immediately. From the very first pages, I was swept away by that familiar feeling I get when entering an Austen novel: sharp wit, social stakes, simmering tension, and a heroine who sees the world differently.

The Naturalist Synopsis

The Naturalist follows Alice Hapgood, a young woman with a passion for the natural world and a mind that refuses to sit still. She’s no typical Regency heroine. She’d rather chase butterflies than chase suitors, and her inner dialogue is sharp, funny, and often at odds with her calm exterior (so very Lizzy Bennet).

When a bit of mistaken identity draws her into the life of the reserved and intelligent Mr. Tierney, the story blooms into a slow-burn romance full of tension, wit, and quiet longing.

If you love the electric pull of Pride and Prejudice or the tender ache of Persuasion, you’ll find so much to savor here.

Set against the lush backdrop of the 19th century, the story blends social observation, slow-burn romance, and a bit of scandal. Like in Emma or Pride and Prejudice, social expectations complicate everything.

What a person says (or doesn’t say) matters so much. Appearances matter. And yet, we get to watch a heroine try to live truthfully within it all.

Final Thoughts

Christina Dudley clearly knows her Austen. She’s playing in that same world of wit, warmth, and romantic tension, but she isn’t copying. She’s building something of her own. She’s honoring the classics while carving out her own voice.

The Naturalist is Regency through and through. It’s a thoughtful, romantic, and deeply satisfying story that lingers like the best love letters do.

Thank you, NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review The Naturalist!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay

This is one of the best historical fiction books I’ve ever read (listened to, thank you @netgalley). If you have the chance to get your hands on this one, READ IT!

It doesn’t just tell you what happened in history, it truly makes you feel it. It educates you and moves you all at the same time. Thank you @tammyehuf I’ll read anything you write.

My #ThoughtDaughter book stack from July—the month I tried to pick a theme that resonated the most with me. My standouts: Alone With You In The Ether, The Virgin Suicides, and My Year Of Rest and Relaxation which I think about every time I buy an iced coffee and consider buying a second. #bookstagram #bookstack #myyearofrestandrelaxation #alonewithyouintheether
