Judge Stone Review | Why the Audiobook Is the Best Experience

July 14, 2026

“My last conscious thought before I fell into a deep sleep was a somber realization that there would be no more normal days for me. Not for a long while. When I slipped into a nightmare I couldn’t tell if I was asleep or awake” – Judge Stone by James Patterson and Viola Davis

Sometimes a book finds you at exactly the right moment, and that’s exactly what happened with Judge Stone. Earlier that day, my mom had picked up a copy, and later that evening, I came across the audiobook on NetGalley. It felt like it was waiting there for me, so I requested it, knowing it would be the perfect excuse to have another one of our unofficial book club discussions.

Although James Patterson is probably one of the most recognizable authors today, Judge Stone was my very first time with one of his novels. Considering my ever-growing TBR, I suppose it was only a matter of time before I finally changed that.

What Is Judge Stone About?

Judge Stone written by James Patterson and Viola Davis, follows a well-respected judge in Union Springs, Alabama. Her latest and most confrontational case thus far in her career forces her to confront some of the most moral questions that reach so far beyond the laws of the courtroom.

As testimonies unfold, and truths are uncovered, difficult decisions must be made that will alter lives forever. The line between the law and personal experience becomes increasingly complicated when it comes to the justice system.

Although categorized as a mystery/thriller, this story does not simply rely on nonstop action and twists. Instead, it’s a legal drama that slowly builds the more you read and then you are forced to really think about all the people involved and the decisions they must face.

Judge Stone Audiobook Review

I had the absolute pleasure of listening to Judge Stone on audiobook, and Viola Davis absolutely nailed it and I truly believe it’s her performance that made this story unforgettable for me.

She doesn’t simply narrate the novel, she becomes the characters. Every conversation, every courtroom scene felt so natural and her performance pulled me so completely that I finished the audiobook in less than twenty-four hours. I genuinely don’t know if I would have moved through just the print copy as fast because her narration added so much depth to the experience.

I really loved living inside Judge Stone’s mind. But do keep in mind this isn’t a nonstop thriller packed with shocking twists around every corner. Instead, it’s a legal drama that slowly builds.

I’ve seen some reviews heavily criticizing Judge Stone’s connection to the case, but for me, that personal history made her feel more human. Whether or not every reader agrees with the conclusions the story reaches, I appreciated that it encouraged empathy and reflection rather than offering a simple solution.

One of my favorite parts of Judge Stone was how the mystery aspect of everything never overshadowed the emotional core of the story. I found myself so emotionally connected to the charatcers, and again, I think Viola Davis has so much to do with that.

Should I Read Judge Stone?

If you’re a reader of mystery/thriller that loves a nonstop action, twisty thriller, this may not be exactly what you’re expecting. But if you enjoy courtroom dramas that are character-focused, I think Judge Stone is well worth your time.

Just keep in mind, Judge Stone is no light read (or listen). The novel explores difficult and deeply personal topics that many may need trigger warnings for. I think at the end of the novel readers should expect to have conversations rather than easy answers. The topics explored here open up the floor for readers to really consider the weight carried by every possible verdict.

It’s a story that truly invites deep discussion after the final chapter. And if you love audiobooks, I can’t recommend this format enough for this story! Viola Davis’s narration elevated this story into one I simply never wanted to pause.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you to NetGalley, Little, Brown & Company, and Hachette Audio for providing me with this amazing ALC!
