Autumn Aesthetics: Fall Decorating with Your Favorite Books

September 16, 2023

Fall is in the air, and it’s not just the pumpkin spice talking! As the leaves change color and the nights grow longer, it’s the perfect time to cozy up with your favorite novel. But why stop at reading? Let’s bring the magic of books into our fall décor!

One of my favorite decorative (and functional!) quirks: stacks of books. They’re strewn around my home, whether it’s that towering pile of fresh library finds (mine and the kids), or the heap of books I skim through for blog inspiration and photo props, they’ve become an ever-present part of my decor.

And, let’s be real, sometimes I like to pretend these haphazard stacks are strategically placed decor choices. There’s something so innately warm and inviting about books. So, as the leaves start their magical transformation outside, let’s bring some of that enchantment indoors, and explore the charm of decorating with books this season!

Why Books Make the Perfect Fall Decor

Books have this inherent ability to add depth, texture, and warmth to any space. In the spirit of the fall season:

  • Nostalgia & Comfort: Just like the feeling of revisiting a beloved novel, the fall season is all about revisiting cherished memories. The intertwining of the two amplifies the comfort of your space.
  • Versatility: From vintage to modern covers, books offer a range of colors and themes to match any autumn vibe you’re going for.
  • Conversation Starters: Your book choices can reflect your personality, interests, or the mood of the season, creating great conversation pieces.
  • Sustainability: Instead of buying new decorations every year, repurposing books you already have is an eco-friendly way to switch up your decor.

Colors of the Season

  • Warm Hues: Think gold, amber, burgundy, and burnt orange book covers. Group them together for a seasonal pop of color.
  • Forest Tones: Deep greens, rich browns, and twilight blues can create a calm, autumnal woodland vibe.

Stack ’em Up!

  • Nightstand Towers: Swap out that lamp with varying heights of book stacks. Add a candle on top for a cozy glow.
  • Coffee Table Centerpieces: Place a tray with pumpkins, pinecones, or fall flowers atop a horizontal book stack.

Vintage Vibes

Hunt for vintage books with weathered edges and faded covers at local thrift shops or garage sales. Their rustic charm screams fall!

Shelf Stories

  • Horizontal Meets Vertical: Lay some books horizontally while others stand upright. Intersperse with tiny pumpkins, dried leaves, or small lanterns.
  • Envelope in Autumn: Drape string lights with leaf designs or garlands with berries and twigs among the books.

Fall Into Fantasy

Highlight books with themes or covers that embody fall. Think magical forests, epic journeys, or classics that always give you that “sweater weather” feel, like ‘Harry Potter.’

Innovative Bookends

Use fall items as bookends! Gourds, decorative corn, or even tall candles can give a seasonal touch while holding up your favorite reads.

Elevate the Eerie

Take your favorite eerie tales off the shelves and pair them with your Halloween ensemble. Dark, gothic covers can add an element of mystery to your decor. Books can serve as the perfect pedestal for skulls, potions, or even that bubbling cauldron of yours.

There you have it, bookworms and decor enthusiasts! The magic of autumn need not be confined to outdoor wonders. With these creative twists on book decor, every nook and cranny of your home can be a cozy, literary embrace of the season. After all, a book-infused fall décor is not just visually captivating, it’s a story waiting to be told!

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
