DIY Dollar Store Crafts: Easy Rustic Jar

August 23, 2020

Happy Sunday! Today’s post is extra special because it is a guest post by my mom, Elaine, of Encores by Elaine!  To make things even more special, it’s her birthday! So, happy birthday Momma and thank you for wanting to share your DIY crafts with my readers! More specifically, an easy Dollar Store craft! Doesn’t get much better than that (for you and your wallet). Enjoy!

DIY Dollar Store Crafts: Easy Rustic Jar

These rustic jars are so simple and inexpensive that you can buy several of them and switch up your style (choice of flowers, the color of paint, etc.) for each season. (we’ll be sharing seasonal ones as they are created!)

The Dollar Store always has a variety of decorative jars in varying shapes and sizes. I recommend ones with a little detail (see the raised squares) so when you paint them, they don’t look flat.  Detail adds a little definition and visual interest to them.

Supplies List

GLASS JAR
EXCELSIOR FLORAL (or any other type of natural grass)
RIBBON or JUTE CORD
SANDPAPER
FLOWER*- I used a Sola Wood Flower that I already had
GLUE*
PAINT*– (the color of your choice)

*Anything linked above with an asterisk I did not purchase at the Dollar Store at this time. However, flowers, paint, and glue are all available there, depending on your preference. Remember, the supplies list can be changed as much or as little as you want. Create home decor that fits you and your home aesthetic. Let’s start creating!

How To Create A Rustic DIY Jar

Paint the jar and let it dry completely. Gently scuff the jar with sandpaper so that it doesn’t look uniform. Tie ribbon around the neck of the jar and make a small flat knot with two ties hanging to the side. You could also use a jute cord or any other material you can find that gives it a natural look.

Then take a small wad of the excelsior floral and glue it inside the neck of the jar.  Attach the excelsior floral securely with the hot glue.  Glue on top of the excelsior floral any type of flower — for this project I used a wooded flower I had previously purchased elsewhere.  Finally, pull a few strands of the natural grass out and around the flower and trim any strays that are not complementary to the finished look.

And that’s it! Such a simple, fast, and fun craft that you can make just by taking a trip to the Dollar Store. Thanks for stopping by! More DIY Dollar Store crafts coming soon!

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
