Monsters, Mayhem, and Movie Magic: 31 Halloween Classics

October 1, 2023

It’s that spooooktacular time of year when pumpkin spice is in the air, ghosts casually photobomb your pictures, and witches replace their brooms with vacuum cleaners. Okay, maybe not that last one, but if you caught the reference, you’ll appreciate this list of popular Halloween classics.

As the witching hour approaches, it’s time to snuggle under that ghoul-themed blanket, grab a cauldron of popcorn, and embark on a cinematic journey of epic (and eerie) proportions. Whether you’re a fan of classic spine-tinglers, family-friendly haunts, or just here for the screams, we’ve conjured up a list that’s to die for. From possessed prom queens to friendly ghosts, here are 31 popular Halloween flicks to get you in the spirit.

Family-Friendly

  1. Hocus Pocus” – Three not-so-smart witches return to the 20th century and chaos ensues. Sanderson sisters, for the win!
  2. “The Nightmare Before Christmas” – When Halloween Town’s Jack discovers Christmas, you’re in for a spooky jolly ride.
  3. “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” – Will this be the year Charlie Brown’s sincerity finally summons the Great Pumpkin? Spoiler: Lucy still pulls the football away.
  4. “Casper” – The friendliest ghost you know wants a pal, and possibly a date to the dance.
  5. “Corpse Bride” – Accidentally proposing to a dead bride? Only in Tim Burton’s world.
  6. “Monster Family” – A family gets cursed and becomes monsters. A typical Tuesday, right?
  7. “Hotel Transylvania” (and its sequels) – Dracula’s no-vacancy haunted resort for monsters, where humans should beware.
  8. “Monsters, Inc.” – Discover the corporate world of monsters, where scares power the city!
  9. “The Addams Family” (both versions) – Snap your fingers! They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and absolutely spooky.
  10. “Frankenweenie” – It’s Frankenstein with a dog. Heartwarming, yet stitched up!

Horror

  1. “Halloween” – Michael Myers’ family reunions involve masks and mayhem.
  2. “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” – Leatherface invites you for dinner. Pro-tip: Don’t accept.
  3. “A Nightmare on Elm Street” – Dreaming of Freddy? Better wake up, fast!
  4. “Friday the 13th” – Camping at Crystal Lake? Might want to reschedule.
  5. “Psycho” – The Bates Motel has killer reviews. And showers.
  6. “The Exorcist” – Priestly house visits take a demonic turn.
  7. “The Shining” – All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy… and a terrifying one.
  8. “Scream” – Who’s behind the mask? The original ghostface-chasing thrill.
  9. “The Conjuring” – Haunted house hunting with the Warrens.
  10. “Get Out” – Meeting the girlfriend’s family was never scarier.
The Mummy with Brandon Fraser movie playing for Halloween

Comedy

  1. “Beetlejuice” – Say his name three times and prepare for supernatural shenanigans.
  2. “Ghostbusters” – Who ya gonna call? These guys. They’ve got unlicensed nuclear accelerators.
  3. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” – Time warp into the weirdest mansion party.
  4. “Young Frankenstein” – It’s pronounced “Fronkensteen” in this monster mash-up.
  5. “Scary Movie” – Every horror film you know gets the spoof treatment.
  6. “The Mummy” (1999) – When tomb-raiding goes wrong. It’s a little horror, comedy, adventure, and love. Perfection.
Sleepy Hallow movie playing for Halloween

Cult Classics

  1. “The Craft” – High school witches, because puberty wasn’t hard enough.
  2. “The Witches” – When real witches hate kids, and Angelica Huston is at her finest.
  3. “Evil Dead II” – Cabin trip + Necronomicon = bad news.
  4. “Sleepy Hollow” – Ichabod Crane, meet the Headless Horseman. He’s not good with hellos.
  5. “The Crow” – Dark Avenger rises, and goth makeup never looked better.

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
