Tech-Loving and Mindful: Finding Your Screen-Time Balance

September 5, 2023

In a world buzzing with constant notifications and digital distractions, it’s easy to feel like we’re always “on.” I’ve so often been guilty of using tech wayyyy too much rather than just enjoying the moment. For the past few months, I have been trying to find that perfect balance between staying connected and nurturing my well-being.

I don’t want to dismiss technology altogether (hello, blog — a large center of my happiness and self-identity); I’m learning how to make the most of our gadgets without missing out on the magic of the moment! I just want to embrace a digital balance and nurture my well-being in the digital age.

Below I have listed out a few new habits to help me strike that balance. By embracing these small yet transformative habits, I’m hoping to find myself more present, more connected, and more in tune with the world around me.

Rise and Shine Before You Swipe

Starting your day with intention is like pressing the refresh button on your mind. Before you dive into the digital ocean, take a moment to savor your coffee, stretch your body, or even jot down a morning thought. Trust me, your notifications can wait a few extra minutes!

Rise and Shine Before You Swipe: A Morning Mantra

Tech-Free Zones, FTW!

Designate some tech-free zones or times in your day. Enjoy dinner without the distractions of notifications, or reading a book before bed instead of scrolling through endless feeds. It’s an opportunity to wind down without the digital noise, allowing your mind to gracefully transition into a state of calm.

App Auditing and Uncluttering

Ever counted how many apps you have on your phone? Yeah, me neither — the app count is a mystery waiting to be unraveled. September is the perfect time to Marie Kondo your digital life! Bid farewell to apps you no longer use and keep only the ones that bring you joy (or productivity).

Trimming the Notifications

Not every notification deserves the red carpet treatment. It’s time to curate your notifications, making sure that only the true rock stars of alerts make their way to your screen. By doing this, you’ll banish the constant barrage of interruptions, transforming your device from a noisy attention-seeker to a serene companion that respects your focus.

Digital Detox Date Night

Plan a date night with your favorite human (or yourself) and leave your devices in another room. Enjoy a tech-free evening of good food, good conversations, and the realization that the world doesn’t end without constant notifications. I love sharing TikToks with my favorite human, but sometimes we get lost in our own phones after sharing a few laughs together. Digital detoxes are a must-have.

Gratitude Journal (Now Digital!)

Transform your device into a digital gratitude journal where you capture those little drops of happiness throughout your day. From the simple joys that brighten your morning to the heartwarming interactions that leave you grinning in the evening, jot them down in your virtual haven. So, when you need a quick dose of upliftment, your gratitude journal will be right there in your pocket.

Wind Down Without a Screen

As the evenings of September start donning their cool and cozy sweaters, it’s the perfect time to snuggle into a new routine – one that bids farewell to screens for a while. Say goodbye to mindless scrolling and embrace the pure joy of tangible experiences. Maybe grab a book or a yoga mat? This is all about you embracing the true essence of being present amid the hustle and bustle in the digital age.

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
