Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell | A Dark Academia Slow Burn Romantasy

A secret for a secret? – Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell

Some love stories are written in ink long before the characters say the words aloud. That’s exactly the kind of slow, aching romance at the heart of this dark academia story. Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell is an irresistible story built on slow, quiet longing.

No grand declarations or sweeping romantic gestures, but something so much softer… feelings literally written in ink and secretly passed to one another. Set within the shadowy halls of Obsidian Academy, the story perfectly blends mystery, secrets, and a beautifully patient (maybe a little painfully slow) slow burn that unfolds one letter at a time.

Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell Synopsis

Wren’s life shatters the moment her brother’s body is returned home from Obsidian Academy. Determined to uncover what really happened to her brother, she enrolls in the elite school herself under the pretense of carrying on the family name as heir.

With her brothers journal and her gift to sense others emotions both hidden with her, she discovers the Obsidian Academy is a world of students and secrets who seem far more dangerous than the monsters she’s warned of outside the walls.

Wren is also warned of Prince Castien Valengard and his possible involvement with her brother, and Wren’s ability to sense emotions makes her immediately wary of him… the only person whose emotions she cannot read.

Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell Review

Oh where to begin… this book truly had all the elements I love: dark acedamia, romantasy, slow burn yearning. And when I say “slow burn” I mean sloooowwww burn. This is a romance that unfolds in quiet glances, reluctant trust, and growing emotional connections through secret letters.

My favorite element of the entire book was the secret correspondence between Wren and Castien.

Their letters create a space where they can be honest with each other in ways they can’t in person. Through ink and parchment, they share memories, tease each other, and slowly reveal pieces of themselves. A secret for a secret.

It gives the romance this deeply personal feeling of falling in love slowly and savoring each memory. There’s something beautifully old-fashioned about a love story built through letters, and here it makes the longing between them feel tangible.

Ocean of Ink by A. R. Conwell Audiobook Review

I experienced Ocean of Ink through the audiobook and loved that it featured dual narration for both Wren and Castien. Hearing both perspectives added so much more depth to the story, especially when it came to Castien.

Both narrators did a wonderful job bringing the characters and the dark atmosphere of Obsidian Academy to life. Their performances made the super slow-burn tension and secret correspondence between the characters feel even more personal.

I cannot wait to listen to these two in book 2! (Tides of Secrets)

Ocean of Ink Final Thoughts

This is truly the first half of a much larger story, and the final chapters make that very clear. Just when the tension between Wren and Castien reaches the most interesting point, the story leaves you hanging with a cliffhanger that practically demands book two immediately.

It’s the kind of ending that made me immediately start searching for the book 2 release date. Good news for me, it’s at the end of this month!

If you love dark academia settings, clean and slowwwww burning romance, and stories where longing is literally written in ink long before it’s spoken aloud, this is absolutely worth reading!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this perfect ARC!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
