The Simple Elf on a Shelf

December 7, 2023

Before I had kids, the Elf on the Shelf tradition seemed like an extravagant holiday marathon I wasn’t ready to run. Social media was flooded with over-the-top Elf escapades that looked more exhausting than exciting. But here I am, three years into our own Elf journey, and it’s nothing like I thought.

For those who love going all-out with Elf escapades, that’s fantastic! More power to ya! But if you prefer a simpler approach to this charming tradition, I totally get it. It’s very doable and just as exciting for the kids.

Magic, Not Mayhem

Our elf became a part of our family three Christmases ago. Initially, I was daunted by the idea of coming up with 24 unique and elaborate scenarios like I had seen while scrolling my phone. But I quickly learned it wasn’t about the complexity of the setups; it was the daily tradition, the playful hide-and-seek game that our Elf brought to life.

This realization was liberating. It shifted my perspective from creating a grand spectacle to focusing on the essence of our family’s joy – the simple, daily moments of surprise and laughter that an Elf brought into our home every December morning.

Easy Elf Hack

One of my favorite strategies is to involve my 4-year-old in the guessing game. “Where do you think our Elf will be tomorrow?” I ask. His ideas are always brimming with wonder as he looks around the house guessing a few spots. I pick one to bring to life and file the other suggestions away.

This not only makes my job easier but also makes him feel like he’s part of the magic. After all, our Elf must be listening, right? Like those times when my son loudly whispers to our Elf about wanting dinosaurs for Christmas. We love those ‘subtle’ hints.

Simple Elf Escapades

The beauty of Elf on the Shelf is in its simplicity. Most nights, our Elf simply finds a new spot to hang out or sit. Yet, every morning, my kids are thrilled to discover him. My 4-year-old is so eager that he heads downstairs on his own to look for the Elf – a rare adventure he reserves only for December days.

Aside from moving our Elf from sitting on the bookshelf to hanging off the Christmas tree, some of the most “elaborate” Elf setups for my kids have been the easiest. I’m talking about under one minute to execute with the biggest laughs in the morning.

  • Taco Night Surprise: Elf cozied up in a leftover taco shell in the kitchen.
  • Cupcake Crumbs: A morning where Elf seemed to have nibbled on our freshly baked cupcakes.
  • Coffee Mischief: The day Elf left tiny coffee grind footprints on the counter, ending up cozily in an empty mug.
  • Toy Car Adventures: Elf took a joyride in my son’s toy trash truck.
  • Polaroid Fun: Elf ‘taking selfies’ was a hit, especially when my kids found his pictures!

Embrace the Simple Magic

Elf on the Shelf doesn’t have to be a chore. It’s a tradition that’s as much fun for the kids as it is for us parents when kept simple and sweet. Let’s not let the pressure of perfection via social media take away the real joy of the season –- our children’s twinkling eyes, full of pure wonder and magic.

Happy Elf-scapades!

“All fame cost her was everything.” 🎸✨💋
Darkening Song by Delphine Seddon was such a fun read. When I saw it being placed in the same space as #daisyjonesandthesix I immediately requested this ARC. Thank you @netgalley and @stmartinspress — I can’t wait for the adaptation!

Daisy Jones & The Six — one of my favorite book adaptations ever. 📚 More books need to be made into a limited TV series rather than crammed into a movie. #daisyjonesandthesix #bookadaptation #bookstagrammer #bookstagram #bookflatlay
