Just Another Dead Boy | Why Cinderella Matters More Than Romeo & Juliet

July 7, 2026

Dr Lawrence said there’s a reason people still love the story of Romeo and Juliet 400 years later. “Well,” I tell him silently, “the story of Cinderella is even older.” – Just Another Dead Boy by Kelly McCaughrain

The description for Just Another Dead Boy by Kelly McCaughrain had me sold immediately. A retelling of Romeo & Juliet where everyone knows their Death Date? Yes, please. Give me all the beautifully tragic true love.

However, there was one moment early on that completely changed the way I read this book. When Dr. Lawrence brings up the lasting impact of Romeo & Juliet, Regan, our main character, thinks of Cinderella instead. I stopped, reread the line, and thought, Wait… the Juliet is actually rejecting the story she’s supposedly retelling?

From that moment on, I read through a Cinderella lens instead of a Romeo & Juliet one. The more I read, the more that single thought by Regan seemed to unlock what the novel was trying to say on a deeper level.

What is Just Another Dead Boy About?

In a world where everyone knows their exact Death Date from the moment they are born, Regan takes a job at an exclusive resort for rich boys spending their final days. As a “Juliet” for the Romeo & Juliet Service, her role is to create an illusion of a star-crossed romance and give these boys the perfect tragic ending.

As a Juliet, she is to provide the illusion of a star-crossed lovers romance while the Death Date approaches. She gives these Romeos a perfect and tragically beautiful ending.

But then Regan is assigned to Jude and the lines between her Juliet performance and Regan reality begin to blur. What starts as a carefully planned final chapter of Jude’s life forces both of them to question what it truly means to live when the clock is always ticking.

Just Another Dead Boy Review

This story took me by surprise. I honestly thought it would be a way more lighthearted (yes, I know it was about death) romcom type of read, despite the tragic Romeo & Juliet aspect.

Because at first, Romeo & Juliet feels like the more than obvious comparison for Just Another Dead Boy. There is a tragic romance with an inevitable ending. This idea asks what love looks like when time is running out.

But early in the story, Regan says something that completely changed the way I read this book.

When Dr. Lawrence talks about how people still love Romeo & Juliet centuries later, Regan silently thinks of Cinderella instead.

Dr Lawrence said there’s a reason people still love the story of Romeo and Juliet 400 years later. “Well,” I tell him silently, “the story of Cinderella is even older.”

Just Another Dead Boy by Kelly McCaughrain

The more I sat with Regan’s thoughts, the more it felt so intentional by McCaughrain. While Romeo & Juliet is a story about a love so powerful it becomes unforgettable, Cinderella tells a different kind of story.

Regan doesn’t need the grand and tragic love story, she needs a reason to believe that tomorrow is still worth looking forward to.

What Just Another Dead Boy Can Teach Us About Time

One of the most beautiful themes in this story is our relationship with time. In a world where literally every person knows the exact date they’ll die, it’s easy to believe that every moment has to be grand and meaningful.

“But maybe the present can last forever, if you go slowly enough. So I stay awake and I tell myself ‘he’s here now. and now, and now, and now.’ And I try to hold onto all the ‘nows’ but every one of them slips through my clenched fists like grains of sand.”

Just Another Dead Boy

Just like time, sand is impossible to hold onto, and the tighter you try to hold it, the faster it escapes. Cinderella cannot stop the clock from striking midnight and Regan cannot stop time from carrying her toward an inevitable ending.

The beautiful message of Just Another Dead Boy is that it reminds us some moments are meaningful simply because we cannot keep them forever.

“I thought if I let you in, you’d be another person to leave behind. But that’s not how it works. I’m taking you with me. Wherever. Always.”

Just Another Dead Boy

Jude doesn’t make any promise that time will stop, but he gives Regan an understanding that love is not lost when a moment ends.

The people we love become part of us. They change the way we see the world. They become part of the chapters that continue after they are gone. Always.

And that is where Cinderella returns.

Cinderella reminds us that midnight is not the end. The clock strikes twelve, the magic fades, but the story continues.

And maybe that is what Just Another Dead Boy was asking all along: not how we would spend our final moments, but whether we are brave enough to believe those moments can create something that lasts.

Is Just Another Dead Boy Worth Reading?

If you love emotional YA with dystopian concepts, Just Another Dead Boy is worth picking up! Kelly McCaughrain truly balances heavy themes of mortality and grief, and then pairs class inequality with a heartfelt romance to create characters who feel so wonderfully imperfect.

Because the heart of this story is not the Death Dates or the fake Romeo and Juliet package, but the very human questions that come with them. How do we love someone we know we will lose? How do we continue forward when time feels like it’s always is slipping away?
