My Ten Years of Playing Guitar

April 24, 2020

“It’s Friday, I’m in love!” Happy Friday! Today I am excited to share with you something fun I have been up to lately. For the past month, I have been able to get back into a favorite hobby of mine that I have loved for almost ten years. One of the most therapeutic and enjoyable hobbies ever — playing guitar.

Playing Guitar Ten Years Ago

My love of guitar came as I said almost ten years ago. One of my brothers would strum away on our grandfather’s old acoustic guitar when I would pop over his house for a visit. He would play favorite songs of ours and teach me how to play a few chords. I can remember spending what felt like an entire day in his attic (aka his art studio) trying to get the hang of the strumming pattern to Wonderwall by Oasis. When I finally got the hang of it, I felt like I could take on any song. And I really wanted to.

I had so many songs in my mind that I wanted to learn. I couldn’t wait to go back to my brother’s house to strum away. That summer for my 21st birthday both of my brothers bought me my own guitar. And I played it nonstop for the next five years. Occasionally played it three years after that, with a steep dropoff about two years ago. For the past two years, it has mainly acted as a piece of decor in my home. My beautiful guitar with a “happy birthday, Julie” sticker still on it (never coming off).

With so much time in the house lately, getting back into a hobby has really never been easier (or necessary for my sanity). I was really excited to receive an Acoustic-Electric Guitar from Best Choice Products. I had no idea acoustic-electric was a thing, so I was more than intrigued. It’s exactly what it sounds like — it’s an acoustic guitar that can be plugged into an amp. It’s a great guitar if you are a beginner or just a casual player like myself.

If you’ve ever considered playing guitar but have always hesitated for one reason or another, my advice: just go for it! Playing the guitar makes me feel happier, and with being stuck indoors we could all use an extra dose of happiness.

Playing Guitar Ten Years Later

There’s an overwhelming feeling of gratification that you get when you successfully play and sing along to an entire song. Especially a song that you love and is special to you in some way.  I’ve always learned songs that correlated with how I was feeling at that time in my life.

No longer am I learning songs that have an “I’m falling in love with you” vibe. Instead, I am focused on songs that make John happy. Although, anything I play makes him happy. So, I guess what I meant to say was, I am learning songs that make me think of him. Such as Your Song by Elton John. I’ve been singing this song to him since he was born because he truly has “the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen.”

John loves to watch me play. He flashes me his big, sweet smile and dances away. Seeing his happiness makes playing the guitar that much more rewarding for me. Should he ever want to play, I will happily teach him the way I was taught. I’ll even have my brother bring over my grandfather’s guitar for him to learn on.

Ten years ago when I first strummed on my grandfather’s guitar, (who by the way was named John) I never pictured myself ten years later strumming away for my own John.

A decaying estate with a library full of secrets (both literal and figurative) all wrapped in a Gothic atmosphere… The Story Keeper by Kelly Rimmer sounded like it was written for me. Like my favorite book, Rebecca (which was mentioned in this story!!)

Thank you so much for the ALC @netgalley
